This practical hands-on course will help you to become an expert at performing power cable ampacity calculations for power cable systems of any type and voltage level.

The course is delivered by our team of cable ratings and systems design experts via online using presentations, hands-on practical exercises, live demonstrations, and Q&A sessions.

This course will cover the following aspects of HV power cable current rating calculations. ELEK Cable HV Software will be used extensively for the hands-on modelling.

Fundamentals of Cable Rating Calculations

The fundamental current rating equations explained.
Ladder network of a cable system explained.
The main standards and technical references.
What are dielectric and joule losses, thermal resistances (and capacitances), and how are they calculated?
What is load factor and how is it calculated?
How do you calculate cable temperatures?
Understanding the current rating for various installation methods:
- Cables in air and trays.
- Groups of cables.
- Buried cables and in backfill.
- Soil drying out.
- Cables in ducts.
- Unfilled troughs.
- Ventilated tunnels.
- Riser poles.
- Offshore J/I-tubes.
- Submarine (underwater).
Hands-on calculations and modelling by the attendees for the various installation methods.

Transient and Dynamic Cable Rating Calculations

Emergency and cyclic cable ratings explained.
What is the complete transient response of a cable?
How do you calculate emergency rating?
How do you calculate cyclic rating to IEC 60853-2 and Neher-McGrath methods?

Prerequisites

An understanding of basic cable system concepts such power cable types and construction, what is current rating and why is it needed, what are bonding arrangements, will help.

You will need to have access to a licenced copy of ELEK Cable High Voltage Software. A general awareness of what the software is for, and its applications would be beneficial.
