Course Overview

This practical hands-on course will teach you how to perform earthing design modelling and calculations using ELEK SafeGrid Earthing Software.

The course is delivered by our team of earthing experts via online using presentations, hands-on practical exercises, live demonstrations, and Q&A sessions.

The course is suitable for attendees from beginner level to seasoned earthing experts. Attendees are sure to gain a lot of useful practical skills and technical knowledge.

This course is eligible to 12 hours of professional development (CPD) with Engineers Australia, and other such engineering accreditating institutions.

Attendance Options

12 hours delivered over three consecutive days during business hours in London (GMT) timezone.

Course Outline

This course will cover the following aspects of using ELEK SafeGrid Earthing Software:

Fundamentals of Earthing System Modelling

  • What is the purpose of earthing system modelling?
  • What are the main components of earthing modelling software?
  • What happens during an earth fault?
  • Invalidity of equipotential grid models and maximum grid size.
  • How to reduce grid impedance and GPR.
  • Effects of grid area, burial depth, conductor size, compression ratio, and number of conductors on performance.
  • How should you use earthing rods?
  • How to model:
    • Metal fences.
    • Concrete slabs.
    • Ground enhancement materials.
  •  Multilayer soil resistivity measurements and modelling.
  • Safety criteria and reach touch voltage concept.
  • High-frequency modelling.

Earthing Systems Design

  • What is the earthing system design process?
  • What are the relevant earthing design standards?
  • Applicable safety criteria and how to use them.
  • How to determine acceptable step and touch voltages.
  • Distribution system earthing:
    • What resistance should the grid be?
    • Should HV and LV be common bonded or separately earthed?
  • Understanding the relevant project requirements.
  • Structuring a professional earthing design report.
  • Hands-on practical design of a substation earthing system following all the steps.

Lightning Protection Design

  • Risk analysis for lightning protection design.
  • What are the methods for lightning protection design (rolling sphere, collection volume, protection angle)?
  • Hands-on design of a substation lightning protection system using the rolling sphere method.

Technical Features and Modules of SafeGrid

  • What is the earthing system design process?
  • How to use the modules including:
    • Design Settings.
    • Fault Current Distribution.
    • Soil Modelling.
    • Build Grid including importing CAD files.
    • Safety Criteria and voltage profiles.
    • Display Results.
  • Hands-on practical exercises teaching how to use the modules.

Hands-on Software Modelling

  • Modelling of grids.
  • Conductor sizing and modelling the effects.
  • Optimal rod spacing.
  • Soil resistivity modelling from Wenner field measurements.
  • Fall-of-potential test simulation.
  • Fault current distribution calculation for complex cable and overhead line systems.

Prerequisites

An understanding of basic earthing concepts such as what is grid resistance, grid potential rise, earth faults, and touch voltage, will help.

You will need to have access to a licenced copy of ELEK SafeGrid Earthing Software. A general awareness of what the software is for, and its applications would be beneficial.

Please contact us if you would need to organise a licenced copy of SafeGrid for the course.

What's Included

The registration fee covers live online attendance for one attendee.

An official certificate of completion suitable for claiming CPD points.
